The Third Daughter by Dr. Henana Berjes is truly a tale of hate, vengeance and remorse. It's a short novella that's emotional, poignant and heartbreaking in its form. It shows the world that have only two kinds of people- those of hate daughters and those who tolerate them.

Naji is a poor, daily waged carpenter in his village and have two daughters. He loves them but hopes for a boy.
After his wife births another child, there isn't a speck of empathy left for Nisa, his third daughter, for Naji had bestowed all he had on the other two.
As years progress, we see how Naji, his wife and his mother discriminate against the third daughter and how she have to grow up before her age.
Nisa grows up in abject hate, loneliness and poverty. She finds solace in art and spend hours in it.
This book circles her life and of her family. It's a tale of a family's struggle with poverty, the betrayal of family, the hopes and dreams crushed and also the pain endured in life.

What I loved most about this book was the character formation. Despite this novel being short, it showed tremendous character growth. We get to know the characters deeply in short paragraphs which makes it wonderful.
It was gripping book that I wasn't able to put down and completed in one sitting.
I would definitely recommend this book to every reader and especially to those who likes to read realistic fiction about the struggles of women in todays time.
