The Shaytan Bride By Sumaiya Matin
I didn't expect this book to be a memoir, from the title I thought it's a horror story or something like that but it turned out to be a memoir and that too such a beautiful one. I have never read a book like this before. The writing style of the author is my favorite thing about this book, it is so perfect and just beautiful.
How clearly, bravely and perfectly the author has penned down her experiences from being a child in Dhaka to being saved by the High Commission of Canada from forced arranged marriage has won my heart. Even when the author talks about Islamophobia, her faith, struggles of women and immigrants, she doesn't sound preachy and talks for herself based on her experiences.
The pace of the story suits the kind of story, making it a perfect read. The title is unique and creative and it is perfectly aligned with the story. You will come across a lot of non - English words as well as religious practices and author's perspective on faith and religion giving you an opportunity to understand the author's culture and faith.
This memoir is unputdownable. It is not a rescue story, it is not a story of a damsel in distress, the author has beautifully brought out the complexities and the multitudes of what it means to be a woman and more specifically what it means to be a Muslim immigrant woman in Toronto. She has beautifully blended her thoughts into the storytelling making them one.
This memoir is very beautifully written, it is engaging and thought - provoking and by the end you come to admire the author for the person that she is as well as for sharing her story in the best way possible.
Thank you, Sumaiya Matin for giving me this opportunity to reading such a wonderful book of yours.
It’s so, well written You did everything perfectly.
